DIY Bio: Brand Refresh

Bringing a DIY spirit to science

Client: DIY Bio
Role: Designer
Scope: Visual Identity, Logo Design, Illustration, Web Design

DIY Bio is a community of citizen scientists dedicated to making biology more accessible, collaborative, and open to public participation.

I refreshed the organization's existing logo and developed a flexible identity system that could be adapted by local chapters while remaining recognizable as part of the larger DIY Bio community.

Building on the hands-on, community-driven spirit of the organization, I also developed a bold visual language combining scientific imagery with the energy of DIY and activist graphics.

A logo built for a growing community

The original DIY Bio logo had a strong, recognizable character, but needed a more flexible system as the organization expanded.

I refined the mark and created a system that allowed local chapters to customize the logo with their own names and colors, giving each community its own identity while maintaining a consistent DIY Bio presence.

Bringing DIY science to life

For the broader visual identity, I drew from the visual language of grassroots posters and DIY culture, combining bold typography and graphic illustration with imagery drawn from biology and scientific experimentation.

The resulting artwork was designed to work across the website, conference materials, posters, and other applications while giving the organization a distinct visual voice.
