Making math feel right for every age

Amplify Desmos Math is an interactive K–12 curriculum centered on math as a social, collaborative experience, spanning digital and printed learning materials.
Working with the Design Director and curriculum designers, I developed a visual language within Amplify’s existing brand system for the program’s printed materials, including workbooks and supplemental resources. The goal was to bring the idea of “social math” to life through illustration, while allowing the imagery to grow in complexity across grade levels.
My role included developing the concept and illustrations for the workbook covers, as well as designing a scalable wayfinding system to help teachers and students navigate grades, editions, and volumes across the printed curriculum.
Growing in visual complexity
The cover illustrations are built around Amplify’s idea of social math: students learning collaboratively, working through problems, and exploring mathematical ideas together.
I developed a proof of concept for how this idea could evolve visually across K–12, growing in complexity alongside the students and curriculum.
For younger students, the artwork uses simpler, more focused compositions and age-appropriate mathematical concepts. As the grades progress, the scenes become increasingly layered, introducing more characters, environments, and mathematical ideas.
Making the materials easier to navigate
Alongside the illustration system, the redesign needed to make a growing family of printed materials easy to distinguish at a glance.
I developed a wayfinding system that established a clear hierarchy across grades, editions, and volumes. Typography, color, labeling, and layout help distinguish Student and Teacher Editions, multiple volumes, and supplemental resources while keeping the larger family of materials visually connected.
The system was designed to scale across K–12 and accommodate new materials as the curriculum expanded.

Connecting print and digital
Amplify Desmos Math is experienced across both printed materials and digital learning tools, so the refreshed visual system needed to work across both.
Illustration, color, typography, and graphic elements create continuity between the workbook covers, interior materials, and digital experience, helping students and teachers move between formats while recognizing them as parts of the same program.
